7 Reasons Why Catholics Give

The world is full of generous people

The world is full of generous people, who give for a variety of reasons. But as Christians, our motives for giving come from a Biblical perspective on wealth and generosity.

We give because…

  1. We know our wealth isn't really ours anyway. It all belongs to God.
…for all that is in the heavens and on the earth is yours; yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. (1 Chronicles 29:11 NRSVCE)
  2. We believe the Bible tells us to give.
Now, inasmuch as you excel in everything—in your faith, your eloquence, your knowledge, your concern for others, and your love for us—so we want you also to excel in this generous undertaking. (2 Corinthians 8:7 NRSVCE)
  3. The Bible tells us that giving is good for us.
…It is more blessed to give than to receive. (Acts 20:35 NABRE)
  4. We know God is pleased with us when we give.
Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have; God is pleased by sacrifices of that kind. (Hebrews 13:16 NABRE)
  5. We take care of one another within the family of God.
Contribute to the needs of the holy ones, exercise hospitality. (Romans 12:13 NABRE)
  6. When we give to others, it's as if we're giving to Jesus himself.
And the king answering, shall say to them: Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me. (Matthew 25:40 Douay-Rheims Edition)
  7. We know we can't keep it forever anyway.
…the senseless and the fool shall perish together: And they shall leave their riches to strangers. (Psalm 48:11 Douay-Rheims Edition)

The truth is, more never made anyone happy.
